Cybercriminals Target Elderly in Pune: 3 Senior Citizens Lose Nearly ₹32 Lakh in Stock and Crypto Scams

In just one day, the Pune city police recorded three distinct cases of cyber fraud at the Sinhagad, Baner, and Kondhwa police stations, with total losses nearing Rs 32 lakh. Disturbingly, all three incidents involved senior citizens, highlighting a concerning trend of cybercriminals specifically preying on the elderly.

Stock trading app cyber scam  

Ramesh Madhukar Jakatdar, a 75-year-old from Vadgaon, fell victim to a scam that cost him Rs 12.7 lakh. The fraudsters, masquerading as stock market specialists, persuaded him to download the KuCoin app from the Play Store and set up a trading account. They initially provided fake profits to build his trust, which led him to transfer larger sums. Ultimately, both the supposed profits and his initial investment disappeared. A report has been filed against unknown cybercriminals at the Sinhagad Road Police Station, with Inspector Bhajanavle overseeing the investigation.

WhatsApp group investment fraud  

In another incident, 57-year-old Srividya Thyagarajan from Balewadi lost Rs 10.72 lakh after joining a WhatsApp group through a dubious link. The group claimed to offer high returns on investments in stocks and cryptocurrency. Believing in the scheme, she sent money to various bank accounts, only to discover later that she had been scammed. Srividya has lodged a complaint at the Baner Police Station, where a case has been registered, and Senior Inspector Navnath Jagtap is conducting the investigation.

Fake trading app scheme  

Azim Bashir Khan, a 57-year-old resident of NIBM Road, was targeted by cybercriminals posing as authorized representatives of a trading company. He was encouraged to download a fraudulent trading app and invest money with promises of significant returns. Subsequently, he was pressured to transfer funds to several accounts, resulting in a loss of Rs 8.96 lakh. Inspector Rauf is leading the investigation into this case.
