NASA’s Curiosity rover has captured a striking image of a pitted rock formation named “Timboy Chaco” while exploring the borderlands of Mount Sharp inside Gale Crater on Mars. The discovery is part of ongoing efforts to study the planet’s geological history and search for signs of past life.
The rock lies within a region Curiosity has been studying for months, known for its unique “boxwork formations.” These structures appear like spiderweb patterns from orbit but reveal ridges and hollowed surfaces up close, shaped by wind erosion over time.
Scientists believe these formations hold important clues about Mars’ past. Evidence gathered by the rover suggests that water once flowed through this region, leaving behind mineral-rich deposits. Over time, Martian winds eroded the surface, exposing these deposits as rugged and pitted rocks like Timboy Chaco.
The current exploration focuses on the eastern and southern border areas of Mount Sharp, a 5 km tall mountain at the center of Gale Crater. These regions are considered key to understanding how water shaped the Martian landscape.
Researchers are particularly interested in whether these mineral deposits could preserve signs of ancient microbial life. The presence of groundwater in this area is a major point of study, as it could indicate that conditions suitable for life lasted longer than previously believed.
“Seeing boxwork this far up the mountain suggests the groundwater table had to be pretty high,” said Tina Seeger, a mission scientist from Rice University, in an earlier NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory statement. “And that means the water needed for sustaining life could have lasted much longer than we thought, looking from orbit.”
The findings strengthen the possibility that Mars once had environments capable of supporting life, making regions like Timboy Chaco critical targets for ongoing exploration.
