CrowdStrike and Microsoft Unite to Simplify Threat Intelligence

CrowdStrike and Microsoft have formed a strategic alliance to address a shared issue in cybersecurity. Confusion often occurs because various companies assign unique names to cybercriminals and hacker groups.

CrowdStrike and Microsoft collaboration will lead to a unified system that allows for the identification of threat actors consistently across both companies’ security platforms. This will help eliminate the confusion that arises from the use of different names.

The issue is widely recognized in the industry. Companies frequently create their own names for hacker groups, complicating the task for analysts and organizations trying to ascertain the subject of a report. For instance, the group commonly known as Cozy Bear is called Midnight Blizzard by one company, while another refers to it by yet another name. This inconsistency makes it challenging and time-consuming to compare information.

CrowdStrike and Microsoft have acknowledged that this presents a significant barrier. They have created a system that connects the various names. The goal is not to enforce a single standard name, but rather to reduce confusion. This will empower security teams to make quicker and more assured decisions and to better correlate different threat reports, enabling them to respond more swiftly before an attack can inflict damage.

According to a senior executive at CrowdStrike, this is a pivotal moment for the industry. He notes that cybercriminals leverage both technological tools and the confusion surrounding their identities to evade security professionals. By clarifying who is responsible for an attack, companies can react in a more focused and effective way.

The initial phase of the collaboration involves a joint analysis conducted by the threat teams from both companies, where they synchronize their names for known actors. Although this partnership has just been announced, they have already identified over 80 actors. For instance, it has been confirmed that Microsoft’s Volt Typhoon and CrowdStrike’s VANGUARD PANDA both refer to groups thought to be backed by China, while Secret Blizzard and VENOMOUS BEAR denote the same Russian group.

CrowdStrike and Microsoft aim to broaden this initiative and welcome other partners to help build a comprehensive overview of threat actors. The objective is to establish a widely endorsed, collaborative source of information that will serve the entire cybersecurity community.

A security executive at Microsoft highlights that cybersecurity represents one of the greatest challenges of our era, particularly in the age of AI. He asserts that collaboration is essential: if security teams can exchange information and respond more swiftly, it will significantly enhance our global protection efforts.
