As smart glasses gain popularity, courts across regions are increasingly restricting their use, citing risks to privacy and the integrity of legal proceedings.
In a recent move, the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania announced a complete ban on AI-powered glasses and camera-equipped eyewear in courtrooms, effective next week. According to a report, the decision was driven by concerns that such devices are difficult to detect and could compromise courtroom security. “Since these glasses are difficult to detect in courtrooms, it was determined they should be banned from the building,” a court representative said.
A key concern behind the ban is the potential for witness intimidation. Devices like Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses, which include built-in cameras, could theoretically be used to record jurors and identify them outside court, although no confirmed cases have been reported.
Recent incidents have also highlighted misuse. In a London court, a man was caught wearing smart glasses that were used to receive answers during cross-examination. According to the judge, unusual pauses during questioning raised suspicion.
Despite the restrictions, enforcement remains a challenge. Reports indicate there are currently no plans to screen individuals entering courtrooms specifically for smart glasses. Identifying such devices is also complex, as some models have visible cameras, while others, like Even G2 glasses, include displays without cameras or speakers.
Even if cameras are concealed, users may still access visual or audio inputs discreetly, making regulation more difficult than it appears.
Philadelphia’s move follows similar actions in Hawaii and Wisconsin, while Colorado is considering a ban. The scrutiny is also extending to other sensitive environments, including academic institutions and cruise ships, where privacy expectations are high.
As adoption of smart glasses grows, regulatory pressure is expected to increase, especially in spaces where confidentiality and fairness are critical.
