As data sovereignty and cyber resilience become critical priorities for enterprises, Commvault has announced the launch of Commvault Geo Shield, a new solution approach focused on helping organisations protect and recover critical data while maintaining strict control over data location, operations, and encryption keys.
The company said Geo Shield is designed to address evolving sovereign requirements as cloud adoption continues to grow. The solution builds on Commvault’s long-standing support for regulated and compliance-driven environments, enabling customers to meet regional, national, and industry-specific data control needs.
“Commvault Geo Shield is designed to help customers strengthen resilience, support data compliance efforts, and maintain control over how and where their data is managed,” said Rajiv Kottomtharayil, Chief Product Officer, Commvault.
At the core of Geo Shield is Commvault’s adaptive fabric architecture, which separates the control plane and data plane. This design allows customers to decide where data is stored, how it is protected, and who controls access, whether within customer-managed or partner-operated environments.
With this launch, Commvault is expanding its cloud sovereignty options to match different customer requirements. These include Commvault Cloud SaaS deployed in local hyperscaler regions to support data residency needs, and Commvault Cloud SaaS in sovereign hyperscaler regions, with initial support for environments such as AWS European Sovereign Cloud. The company said additional sovereign cloud regions are planned.
Geo Shield also supports partner-operated sovereign offerings, enabling qualified local service providers to deliver national or regional sovereign cloud services using Commvault software and air-gapped protection. In addition, customers can opt for private sovereign cloud deployments operated by themselves or designated partners within dedicated environments.
Commvault said Geo Shield enables cyber resilience without compromising sovereignty. It supports deployment models that validate recoverability and operational resilience while keeping data, operations, and encryption keys within defined regions. The solution also allows customers to retain full control of encryption keys through models such as Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) and Hold Your Own Key (HYOK), with integration into customer- or partner-managed hardware security modules.
The platform is designed to operate within strict boundaries, including “no call home” requirements, with services managed by screened local partners.
Commvault already supports a wide range of regulatory and compliance frameworks, including FedRAMP High, FIPS 140-3, GovRAMP, SEC Rule 17a, HIPAA, PCI DSS v4.0, DORA, and NIS2. It also supports global frameworks such as IRAP PROTECTED status for the Australian Federal Government and certified Cloud Service Provider status with the Dubai Electronic Security Center.
