As global technology priorities continue to evolve, India is emerging as a critical growth engine for multinational technology companies.
Cognizant is expanding its operations across India, with a clear focus on tier-2 cities, as part of its strategy to tap into the country’s vast and growing talent pool. The announcement was made by Surya Gummadi, President of Americas at Cognizant, during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting. He said India has consistently remained central to the company’s long-term growth vision.
The company has recently added new locations to its India footprint, including Visakhapatnam, Indore, and Gujarat’s Gift City. Gummadi said expansion into tier-2 cities is a core pillar of Cognizant’s strategy. At the same time, the company continues to scale operations in major technology hubs such as Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Pune, depending on client demand.
“So, expansion in the major cities plus doubling down on the tier-two cities to talent into those cities is something that we do,” he said.
India also plays a key role in Cognizant’s artificial intelligence strategy. Gummadi said most associates supporting clients with the company’s AI solutions are based in India, backed by its production centres across the country. “India has always been at the forefront of navigating technology shift and education in the country has already been pivoted or adjusted to this AI era,” he said.
On hiring, Gummadi noted that Cognizant continues to recruit a significant number of fresh graduates from Indian colleges, along with talent in the US. He pointed to changes in the education system aligned with AI-focused skills, adding that the company is now receiving what he described as “partially ready talent.” He also said Cognizant’s Global Capability Centers business remains a vital part of its overall strategy.
Cognizant’s GCC model follows a four-pronged approach. The company helps clients set up greenfield GCCs, jointly operate centres, or follow a build, operate, and transfer model. It also supports existing GCCs in expanding their operations. In addition, Cognizant offers modular services such as network infrastructure, real estate support, talent training, and recruitment for clients that do not require full-scale services.
