Mumbai: Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is set to inaugurate the concluding 76-kilometer segment of the iconic Nagpur-Mumbai Super Communication Expressway, connecting Igatpuri in Nashik district to Amane in Thane, on June 5. This crucial portion will open to public traffic the same day, marking the full operational launch of the 701-kilometer expressway, sources from the Chief Minister’s office and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) confirmed.
Anil Gaikwad, MSRDC Managing Director, shared, “The entire stretch is complete, and the CM will officially open it on Thursday.” The development of this final segment cost approximately ₹1,182 crore, a financial collaboration between MSRDC and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Notably, the stretch includes three key interchanges at Igatpuri, Kutghar in Shahapur, and Amane, Thane, and features a 7.8-kilometer tunnel — the longest tunnel in India — easing travel through the Western Ghats.
Previously, travelers navigating the Mumbai-Nashik route faced the daunting climb of 450 meters via winding roads through Kasara Ghat. The new highway dramatically lowers this elevation to 160 meters and halves the travel time between Igatpuri and Amane from 90 minutes to just 40.
With this inauguration, the entire expressway will be fully functional, slashing travel time between Nagpur and Mumbai from 16 hours to 8 hours. Designed for speeds reaching 150 kilometers per hour, this ₹55,000-crore marvel boasts 33 major bridges, 274 minor bridges, 65 flyovers, and six tunnels, including the longest at Kasara Ghat. The route spans across 10 districts and 390 villages, promising a transformative impact on Maharashtra’s landscape.
Earlier phases have been opened by dignitaries including the Prime Minister and past Chief Ministers, with the first segment from Nagpur to Shirdi inaugurated in December 2022 and subsequent sections launched in 2023 and 2024.
Named officially as ‘Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg,’ this visionary project was conceived by CM Fadnavis himself. Initial progress was slowed by resistance from farmers affected by land acquisition, but perseverance has now brought this monumental project to completion.
Maharashtra expressway is poised to accelerate travel, trade, and economic growth across Maharashtra, heralding a new chapter in regional development.
