Cisco has introduced its most powerful networking system to date, the Cisco 8223, designed to connect data centres and support the rising demand for distributed AI workloads. Built on the company’s new Silicon One P200 chip, the system delivers an impressive 51.2 terabits per second of Ethernet routing capacity, setting a new standard for data centre interconnect performance.
The 8223 is engineered to meet the increasing data traffic generated by artificial intelligence applications, which are pushing the limits of even the largest hyperscale data centres.
“AI compute is outgrowing the capacity of even the largest data centre, driving the need for reliable, secure connection of data centres hundreds of miles apart,” said Martin Lund, Executive Vice President of Cisco’s Common Hardware Group. “With the Cisco 8223, powered by the new Cisco Silicon One P200, we’re delivering the massive bandwidth, scale and security needed for distributed data centre architectures.”
The Cisco 8223 features 64 ports of 800G, processes more than 20 billion packets per second, and scales to over 3 exabits per second. It also includes advanced technologies such as deep buffering, 800G coherent optics for connectivity up to 1,000 kilometres, and line-rate encryption with post-quantum security.
Initially, the platform will be available for open-source SONiC deployments, with plans to add support for IOS XR, providing greater flexibility across different network environments.
With the launch of the Cisco 8223, the company aims to strengthen the infrastructure needed for high-performance AI computing and large-scale data management.
