Chip startup Retym announced on Monday that it has secured $75 million this year, contributing to a total funding of $180 million aimed at developing networking chips for artificial intelligence computing in data centers.
Retym specializes in chips designed for digital signal processing (DSP), which facilitates rapid data transfer between large data centers—a capability that has gained significance due to the rising demand for AI technologies.
Building the foundational AI models that support applications like ChatGPT necessitates the integration of thousands of chips with networking infrastructure.
Currently, the market for the DSP chips that Retym is developing is primarily led by Marvell Technology. According to CEO Sachin Gandhi, the chip Retym is creating aims to address a bottleneck in data centers, as the connectivity among numerous chips becomes increasingly crucial for AI computing tasks.
“We are focusing on building coherent DSP chips for the next generation deployment of AI infrastructure and cloud,” Gandhi said.
Retym’s initial chip is intended to transfer data over distances between 10 and 120 kilometers, with a focus on optimizing performance for ranges of 30 to 40 kilometers. The DSP chip being developed by Retym employs a modulation technique to maintain data integrity during transmission.
“They took the approach of solving the harder problem with longer distances,” said Navin Chaddha, managing partner at Mayfield, a venture fund that has invested in Retym.
For this first chip, Retym is utilizing the five nanometer manufacturing process from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., and its engineers are in the process of testing and validating the samples. The Series D funding round was spearheaded by Spark Capital. Founded four years ago, Retym aims to launch its first product this year.
