Chinese AI Companies Unite to Build Local Tech Ecosystem

As US export restrictions on advanced chip technology continue, Chinese artificial intelligence companies are joining forces to strengthen their domestic ecosystem. At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, which concluded on Monday, two major industry alliances were announced.

The first group, called the “Model Chip Ecosystem Innovation Alliance,” brings together AI chipmakers and large language model developers. The goal is to create a complete chinese tech chain from chips to infrastructure. Zhao Lidong, CEO of Enflame, one of the member chipmakers, said, “This is an innovative ecosystem that connects the complete technology chain from chips to models to infrastructure.” Other members include Huawei, Biren, and Moore Threads, all of which have been affected by US sanctions limiting access to technology built with American expertise. This alliance was introduced by LLM developer StepFun.

The second group, the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce AI Committee, aims to support the integration of AI into industry. This group includes SenseTime, which has shifted its focus from facial recognition to LLMs after also facing US restrictions. Other members include StepFun, MiniMax, Metax, and Iluvatar CoreX.

The conference also featured several product launches. One of the most talked-about innovations was Huawei’s CloudMatrix 384, which uses 384 of its new 910C chips. Experts claim this system outperforms Nvidia’s GB200 NVL72 in certain areas, signaling progress in China’s efforts to compete globally in AI hardware.

These alliances and new technologies highlight China’s push to become more self-reliant in AI development and reduce its reliance on foreign components.
