China’s exports of rare earth magnets to the United States surged by more than six times in June compared to May, marking a sharp recovery in the supply of these critical components used in electric vehicles and wind turbines. According to data from the General Administration of Customs, China shipped 353 metric tons of rare earth magnets to the US in June, an increase of 660 percent from the previous month.
The rebound follows trade agreements made in June that resolved several disputes over rare earth mineral and magnet shipments to the United States. These talks also included a decision by chipmaker Nvidia to resume sales of its H20 AI chips to China.
China, which supplies over 90 percent of the world’s rare earth magnets, had earlier in April added some rare earth products to its export restriction list. This move came as a response to US tariffs and led to a significant drop in shipments during April and May. The delays in acquiring export licences created supply chain issues worldwide, with some car manufacturers outside China being forced to partially stop production due to a shortage of rare earth materials.
Overall, China exported 3188 tons of rare earth permanent magnets globally in June, up 157.5 percent from 1238 tons in May. However, this figure is still 38.1 percent lower than exports in June 2024.
Analysts say shipments are likely to continue recovering in July as more exporters received licences last month. Still, data shows that in the first half of 2025, China’s total rare earth magnet exports dropped 18.9 percent year on year to 22319 tons.
This sharp rise in exports to the US signals a stabilising trade relationship and easing supply concerns in the clean energy and tech industries.
