China’s Huawei Technologies develops new AI chip

China’s Huawei Technologies is getting ready to test its newest and most potent AI processor in an attempt to take the place of some of the more expensive models made by the American chip giant Nvidia media said on Sunday.

Citing persons with knowledge of the situation, the story said that Huawei had contacted a few Chinese tech firms to evaluate the new processor, known as the Ascend 910D, for technological viability.

The first batch of processor samples is expected to arrive as early as late May, according to the article, and the Chinese business thinks that the most recent version of its Ascend AI processors would be more potent than Nvidia’s H100.

According to a Monday media report, Huawei intends to start shipping large quantities of its cutting-edge 910C AI processor to Chinese clients as early as next month.

Developing high-end circuits that might rival Nvidia’s products for training models—a process in which data is given to algorithms to help them learn to make right decisions—has been a challenge for Huawei and its Chinese counterparts for years.

Washington has isolated China from Nvidia’s most cutting-edge AI technologies, including its flagship B200 processor, in an effort to restrict China’s technical advancements, especially those for its military.

For instance, U.S. officials prohibited the sale of the H100 microprocessor in China in 2022 before it was ever introduced.

Media request for comment was not immediately answered by Huawei, while Nvidia declined to comment.
