China Strikes Back: 12 US Tech Firms Face Export Ban, Tariffs Soar Amid Escalating Trade Tensions

The long-standing tug-of-war between the United States and China has reached a fresh flashpoint. In a bold counteraction aimed at “safeguarding national security and interests,” China has enforced a ban on exports to 12 American technology firms, starting April 10. Alongside this move, tariffs on US imports have surged from 34% to 84%, escalating the already simmering trade conflict.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce, in its formal statement, cited its Export Control Law and Regulations on Dual-Use Items, adding:

“In accordance with the relevant provisions of the Export Control Law of the People’s Republic of China and the Regulations of the People’s Republic of China on Export Control of Dual-Use Items, and in order to safeguard national security and interests and fulfill international obligations such as non-proliferation, it is decided to include 12 US entities including American Photonics Corporation in the export control list.”

This announcement means the export of items with both civilian and military uses to these companies is strictly prohibited. If export is absolutely essential under special scenarios, traders must seek explicit approval from the Ministry.

As per the ministry:

“This means that: One, the export of dual-use items to the above-mentioned 12 US companies is prohibited; any related export activities currently underway should be stopped immediately. Two, if export is really necessary under special circumstances, the export operator shall apply to the Ministry of Commerce.”

The list of companies now restricted includes:

American Photonics

Novotech, Inc

Echodyne

Marvin Engineering Company, Inc.

Exovera

Teledyne Brown Engineering, Inc

BRINC Drones, Inc.

SYNEXXUS, Inc.

Firestorm Labs, Inc.

Kratos Unmanned Aerial Systems, Inc.

Domo Tactical Communications

Insitu, Inc.

Simultaneously, the State Council Tariff Commission announced a dramatic tariff hike on all US imports, raising the rate to 84% effective from 12:01 p.m. on April 10, 2025.

In a sharply worded note, the Commission stated:

“The US’s practice of escalating tariffs on China is a mistake on top of a mistake, which seriously infringes on China’s legitimate rights and interests and seriously damages the rules-based multilateral trading system.”

It added that:

“In accordance with the Tariff Law of the People’s Republic of China, the Customs Law of the People’s Republic of China, the Foreign Trade Law of the People’s Republic of China and other laws and regulations and the basic principles of international law, and with the approval of the State Council… the additional tariff rate… will be adjusted from 34% to 84%.”

As the trade battlefield intensifies, the world watches closely. This tit-for-tat could reshape global tech supply chains and further strain diplomatic ties between the two largest economies.
