China launches the world’s longest one way flight, cutting travel time to South America

A Chinese airline has introduced the world’s longest one way flight, creating a new aviation milestone while reducing travel time between China and South America by more than four hours.

The flight, MU745, operated by China Eastern Airlines, took off from Shanghai Pudong International Airport early Thursday for its final destination of Buenos Aires, Argentina, with a stop in Auckland, New Zealand. Covering nearly twenty thousand kilometres and crossing both hemispheres, the route has set a new global record for distance on a one way flight, the airline said in a statement.

The service will operate two round trip flights every week. Along with achieving the longest flight distance, the new route closes an important gap by offering a connection from Shanghai to major South American cities. It also creates a new southbound corridor across the Pacific Ocean, strengthening air travel links among Asia, Oceania and South America.

The airline noted that due to aircraft limitations and the long distance involved, flights between China and South America have traditionally required transit stops through Europe or North America. The new southern corridor, which includes a stop in Auckland, significantly shortens travel time by reducing the typical thirty hour journey to around twenty five hours, while also improving connection efficiency.

According to the airline, the new service marks a major step in expanding long haul travel options and offering more convenient international connectivity for passengers across three continents.
