China Tightens Export Controls on Rare Earth Technologies Amid Trade Tensions with US

China has announced tighter restrictions on the export of rare earth technologies, expanding controls that have long been a source of friction with the United States. The new rules, published Thursday by the Ministry of Commerce, ban the export of technologies related to rare earth mineral extraction, magnet manufacturing, and rare earth recycling unless officially permitted.

The move comes as China calls on the US to remove what it describes as “unreasonable” tariffs and create conditions for expanded trade. Chinese President Xi Jinping has also renewed pressure on the US to revise a decades-old statement regarding Taiwan, urging Washington to explicitly declare opposition to Taiwan’s independence.

Last month, Xi spoke with former US President Donald Trump, urging him to avoid restrictive trade measures and to provide a “fair and non-discriminatory” environment for Chinese companies to invest in the United States. During the call, Trump noted progress on trade discussions, fentanyl control, the conflict in Ukraine, and the TikTok deal.

The tightened export rules are likely to impact global supply chains, as rare earth minerals are essential for a range of high-tech applications including electronics, renewable energy, and defense technologies.
