China brings largest integrated green hydrogen project into operation

A major milestone in clean energy development has been reached as a large scale green hydrogen project began operations in Northeast China.

The integrated green hydrogen ammonia methanol project started operations on Tuesday in Songyuan, located in Jilin Province. Experts said the launch strengthens China’s ability to manage renewable energy supply while supporting stable and continuous chemical production, and offers a practical model for global green hydrogen commercialization.

The project, known as the Songyuan Hydrogen Energy Industrial Park Phase I, was developed by China Energy Engineering Corp. It is designed to produce 45,000 tons of green hydrogen, 200,000 tons of green ammonia, and green methanol every year.

The facility covers the entire industrial chain, from renewable power generation and hydrogen production to storage, hydrogen based chemicals, and equipment manufacturing. Phase I alone delivers 200,000 tons of green ammonia and green methanol capacity, making it the largest project of its kind worldwide.

It also includes the world’s largest ground based hydrogen storage system, with enough capacity to meet the daily cooking needs of 600,000 people.

After entering operations, the project received ISCC EU green certification and signed the world’s first contract for supplying green ammonia as fuel for ocean going ships, according to company executives.

Construction began in September 2023. The full plan includes 3,000,000 kilowatts of renewable power and 800,000 tons of green synthetic ammonia and methanol. Phase I alone saves about 600,000 tons of standard coal and cuts carbon dioxide emissions by 740,000 tons each year.

Experts said the project highlights how hydrogen energy can help absorb excess renewable power while supporting industrial growth. China currently accounts for over 50% of the world’s renewable hydrogen capacity and has included hydrogen power in its 15th Five Year Plan for 2026 to 2030.
