A massive satellite manufacturing center in southern China is now nearing the start of operations and is expected to reshape how satellites are built and launched.
The new satellite super factory is located at the Wenchang International Aerospace City in Hainan Province. Once fully operational, the facility will be able to produce up to one thousand satellites every year. One of its key features is the ability to move satellites directly from the production line to the launch site without delay.
More than twenty companies from across the space industry supply chain have already signed agreements to set up operations at the site. These include firms involved in rocket development, satellite production, launch services, and tracking systems. This will create a complete and connected aerospace ecosystem within the region.
The complex includes an advanced international satellite manufacturing center and a combined satellite and rocket research and development center. It houses one main super factory, one testing and inspection center, and eight core unit development centers. This is also the only facility in China that can both assemble satellites and carry out satellite rocket encapsulation at the same location. It is currently the largest satellite manufacturing hub in Asia.
Once production begins, the first satellite is expected to roll out soon. The facility will gradually build an efficient system where “components come in, and integrated satellite-rocket systems go out,” as stated by Wenchang International Aerospace City.
The factory will play a major role in supporting the “Thousand Sails Constellation” plan and will help speed up the large-scale deployment of low orbit satellite constellations.
Taking advantage of the Hainan Free Trade Port, an international satellite data trading platform will also be established with a bonded data zone. This is aimed at attracting satellite data resources from across the world and strengthening China’s role in global space data services.
