Chennai Inaugurates Longest Steel Flyover Connecting T Nagar and CIT Nagar

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated the much-awaited steel flyover in T Nagar, Chennai, on Tuesday. Named after the late DMK legislator J. Anbazhagan, who represented the T Nagar assembly constituency in 2001, the 1.2-kilometre-long flyover was built at a cost of ₹164.92 crore. It connects South Usman Road with CIT Nagar First Main Road and aims to ease traffic flow into T Nagar, one of Tamil Nadu’s busiest shopping hubs.

A senior municipal official said the flyover will improve cross-city travel. “Vehicles from Saidapet and Guindy can now reach Nungambakkam and Chetpet easily. Similarly, vehicles from Mahalalingapuram can reach CIT Nagar 1st Main Road and Anna Salai in a few minutes,” the official explained.

The new flyover integrates seamlessly with a pre-existing 0.8-kilometre structure, forming a continuous two-kilometre elevated corridor that allows motorists to bypass ground-level congestion. This connection is expected to significantly reduce travel times between Saidapet, Guindy, Adyar, Kodambakkam, Anna Nagar, and Nungambakkam, while lowering fuel consumption and vehicular emissions.

Built under the Infrastructural and Amenities Fund, the project is being praised as both an engineering and financial milestone. It marks Tamil Nadu’s first steel flyover executed by the state government, with advanced construction methods ensuring durability and enhanced safety. Previously, the only steel flyover in the state had been built by the National Highways Authority of India.

Civic planners believe the flyover not only addresses pressing traffic challenges but also sets a benchmark for future infrastructure projects in Chennai, reflecting the city’s move toward modern and sustainable mobility solutions.
