Chembur Man Arrested for Role in Rs 7.3 Crore Investment Scam

A 41-year-old resident of Chembur, Rahul Gawli, has been arrested by the south region cyber police in connection with a Rs 7.3 crore investment scam. He allegedly provided his documents and allowed his address to be used to open a bank account for a fake company through which part of the scam money was routed.

The complaint was filed by a 63-year-old businessman from south Mumbai who was lured into a fraudulent investment scheme. In February, he clicked on a link that added him to a WhatsApp group where a woman named Riya Bansal and others posed as representatives of an investment firm claiming to manage investor portfolios. They promised to invest his money in the primary market and assured him of a 10 percent monthly return.

The businessman initially intended to invest using his daughter’s name and shared her details. He later received a registration form containing a fake Sebi registration number. He was added to another WhatsApp group meant for high-end clients and was asked to download a trading app.

Between March 7 and May 6, the businessman transferred Rs 7.3 crore across multiple bank accounts. He was able to withdraw Rs 28 lakh at one point but was blocked from withdrawing more. When he questioned it, Bansal told him he would need to deposit another Rs 3.7 crore to access his funds. This raised suspicion, and he filed a police complaint on May 17.

Investigators found that Gawli had been taken to Goa by the fraudsters, where a bank account was opened in the name of a fake company using his and another accused’s documents. He was promised a monthly payment for his involvement. The scammers operated the shell company’s bank account and received at least Rs 5 lakh from the complainant.

A team led by senior inspector Nankumar Gopale and inspector Suresh Bhoye is currently investigating the case.
