ChatGPT, previously recognized just as an AI chatbot, is rapidly evolving into a versatile digital assistant. OpenAI’s leading product now features advanced functionalities such as image generation, AI search, online shopping (which is still in its initial stages), and in-depth research inquiries. However, the company has much grander ambitions, planning to introduce a robust “super assistant” by June 2025.
Documents leaked from the ongoing U.S. Google antitrust trial, reportedly from late 2024, disclose OpenAI’s roadmap named ChatGPT: H1 2025 Strategy. This report details the company’s vision for a next-generation assistant that can deeply comprehend user preferences and serve as a seamless gateway to the internet.
OpenAI characterizes this super assistant as “an intelligent entity with T-shaped skills”—able to manage both straightforward tasks like organizing to-do lists or scheduling appointments and more intricate ones such as legal research or travel planning. In essence, the assistant is intended to perform any task a smart, emotionally aware human with a computer could accomplish.
This strategic advancement aligns with CEO Sam Altman’s ambitious partnership with acclaimed designer Jony Ive. Together, they are reportedly developing custom hardware, potentially a smart home device, to integrate the assistant into everyday life. The documents suggest that ChatGPT will soon be ubiquitous, assisting users with cooking at home, navigating during travels, managing workplace meetings, or even contemplating during solitary walks.
With multimodal capabilities and a generative UI, ChatGPT will be able to engage through voice, text, and visuals, enhancing its intuitiveness and expressiveness. OpenAI’s latest models, GPT-4.5 and beyond (codenamed o2 and o3), are already deemed sufficiently capable of reliably executing these agentic tasks.
The company recognizes the difficulties presented by major tech firms that control hardware platforms. To create a more equitable environment, OpenAI intends to collaborate with regulators to establish ChatGPT as the default assistant on multiple devices.
Even with its ambitious goals, OpenAI is careful about what lies ahead. Internal strategy documents indicate worries that user growth may not consistently match revenue. To facilitate the operations of the super assistant, ChatGPT is making significant investments in enhancing its data infrastructure via the Stargate project, allocating billions towards new data centers in the U.S. and UAE.
