OpenAI’s effort to build an app ecosystem within ChatGPT is encountering initial resistance, despite its ambition to rival established platforms like Apple’s App Store.
Designed as a hub for third-party integrations, the ChatGPT app ecosystem allows businesses to deliver services directly inside the chatbot. The vision is to create a unified, AI-driven interface for users. However, nearly 6 months after launch, growth has been slower than anticipated.
The platform currently supports over 300 app integrations, but user adoption remains limited. Many offerings provide only partial functionality, and discoverability within the interface continues to be a challenge.
Developers have also pointed out friction in the ecosystem. A complex approval process, lack of detailed usage insights, and technical limitations have made it difficult to build, optimize, and scale applications effectively.
Another key barrier is partner reluctance. Several companies are cautious about giving up control over customer relationships and payment systems, which is slowing deeper integration into the platform.
The initiative had drawn comparisons to Apple’s App Store, with the potential to redefine how users interact with digital services. It also signals a broader industry shift toward AI-first ecosystems, where conversational interfaces replace traditional app navigation.
However, the slower momentum highlights the complexity of building such platforms. Success depends not just on technology, but also on developer trust, strong monetization frameworks, and a seamless user experience.
Despite these early challenges, the long-term opportunity remains significant. If these gaps are addressed, ChatGPT’s app ecosystem could emerge as a viable alternative in the evolving app landscape.
The broader implication is clear—competition between AI-led platforms and traditional app ecosystems is intensifying, with control over user experience becoming a critical battleground.
