ChatGPT used in HSC exam cheating racket busted in Gadchiroli

An AI-driven cheating racket during the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC Class 12) examinations was uncovered last week in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra. The case has raised concerns, especially in a region known for low internet penetration and its past Maoist influence.

Education department sources said question papers in political science, chemistry and physics were likely compromised. The incident took place at an exam centre in Chamorshi on February 18.

A surprise raid by a flying squad led by Zilla Parishad CEO Suhas Gade exposed the operation. The team arrived minutes before the exam concluded at around 4.55 pm and found chits scattered across the premises. These slips contained answers generated using ChatGPT.

During the inspection, officials noticed peon Suraj Kelzarkar entering the premises in a suspicious manner. His mobile phone was seized. Examination of the device revealed that question papers had been forwarded to a teacher at the same school, Mahendra Kirme.

Further inquiry revealed that questions were either photographed or relayed outside the exam hall, entered into ChatGPT to generate instant answers, printed nearby and then smuggled back into the centre for mass copying. Officials described it as a “hi-tech” method replacing traditional cheating practices.

ZP CEO Suhas Gade said he came across chits with written answers during routine checks. “We formed a probe committee under the education officer. Actions were initiated to suspend four persons,” he said.

Vasudev Bhuse, education officer (secondary), confirmed the matter has been reported to the HSC board. “School teacher Sushil Lanjewar, exam centre conductor Mahendra Burlewar, another teacher Mahendra Kirme and a peon Suraj Kelzarkar have been named in an FIR. While Lanjewar has been suspended, action will be taken against other accused too,” he said.

Gadchiroli, once a hotspot for Maoist activity, has been working to strengthen education and create opportunities for youth. Officials said the incident is particularly concerning as it undermines trust in the examination system in a region striving for academic progress.
