ChatGPT to get more human and flexible as restrictions ease, says OpenAI CEO

OpenAI is preparing to release a new version of ChatGPT in the coming weeks that will be more expressive, flexible, and “human-like,” CEO Sam Altman has confirmed. The update aims to bring back some of the personality users enjoyed in earlier versions while keeping safety measures in place.

Altman explained that ChatGPT had been intentionally restrictive to address sensitive areas, including mental health. “We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues,” he said. “Now that we’ve mitigated the serious issues and have new tools, we’re going to safely relax restrictions in most cases.”

The upcoming version will allow users to customise ChatGPT’s behaviour. Users can choose a friendly conversational style, add emojis, or make interactions feel more “human-like.” Altman emphasised that these changes will be user-driven, not designed to increase engagement: “Only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing.”

OpenAI also plans to introduce broader age-gating features in December. This will differentiate between adult and minor users. Verified adults will have access to more content options, including erotica, under the company’s “treat adult users like adults” principle.

Earlier this year, OpenAI had tightened ChatGPT’s tone and behaviour to prioritise safety and compliance. The upcoming update signals a shift toward balancing responsibility with personality, bringing back some of the charm that made GPT-4o popular among users.

The update reflects OpenAI’s confidence in new safety tools and moderation systems, allowing the company to relax earlier limits without compromising user safety.
