ChatGPT has reportedly become the world’s most downloaded mobile application

OpenAI, a US-based artificial intelligence (AI) company, claims that ChatGPT surpassed Instagram and TikTok to become the most downloaded mobile app globally in March 2025. The trend of making and sharing Ghibli-style visuals is probably what drove the app’s estimated 46 million downloads worldwide in March, according to data made public by AppFigures.

According to the research, ChatGPT generated over 33 million downloads from the Google Play Store for Android devices and 13 million downloads from the App Store for iPhones.

With a distinct ratio of 5 million downloads on iOS and 41 million on Android, Instagram apparently matched ChatGPT’s total of 46 million downloads. The Chinese social networking site TikTok, which has around 45 million downloads overall—8 million on iOS and 37 million on Android—came in second to Instagram.

Brad Lightcap, the chief operating officer of OpenAI, recently said on X (previously Twitter) that ChatGPT’s fastest-growing market is now India. He went on to say that since ChatGPT’s introduction, more than 700 million photos have been created by its more than 130 million users using its Ghibli-style image production tool. This is also thought to be a key factor in the rise in downloads of the ChatGPT mobile app.

Relatedly, OpenAI has significantly improved ChatGPT’s memory feature, allowing its chatbot to remember past exchanges and provide more customized answers. Users must opt in before the function can be activated, and it is currently only available to Pro members. The upgrade is a component of OpenAI’s larger plan to increase the adaptability and user awareness of its AI models.
