ChatGPT may soon get Skills feature for faster and repeatable commands

A new feature being tested by OpenAI could make using ChatGPT quicker and more consistent by reducing the need to repeat the same instructions in every conversation. After recently introducing Skills to its AI coding agent Codex, the company is now tipped to be working on bringing the same capability to ChatGPT.

According to a post shared on X by Tibor Blaho, Lead Engineer at AIRPM, OpenAI may add Skills to ChatGPT in the near future. Skills are essentially saved instructions or prompts that users can activate instantly using short commands. This would allow users to apply specific preferences even when starting a new chat session.

For example, a user who relies on ChatGPT for research could create a Skill that ensures responses stay grounded to provided text or URLs. Other Skills could instruct the chatbot to write only in paragraphs, avoid using an em dash, or limit answers to a fixed number of words. Instead of typing these directions every time, users would only need to trigger the shortcut.

In Codex, OpenAI implemented Skills using Anthropic’s agentskills.io standard. This system allows users to activate Skills by pressing the forward slash key followed by a custom shortcut. The same slash command approach could be introduced in ChatGPT, making the feature simple and intuitive to use.

The tipster also claims that OpenAI may add a Skills editor to ChatGPT. This tool would let users view, edit, or update their saved Skills. Another reported option could allow users to convert custom GPTs into Skills. Custom GPTs are mini chatbots designed for specific tasks, such as fiction writing, but they currently work only within a single fixed chat. Skills would remove this limitation by working across sessions.

As of now, OpenAI has not officially confirmed or announced the feature. Users are advised to treat these details cautiously until the company makes a formal announcement or rolls out Skills publicly in ChatGPT.
