Users will now have more control over how ChatGPT responds during conversations as OpenAI has rolled out a new personalisation feature for the chatbot. The update allows users to fine tune specific personality traits and response styles, adding more flexibility to everyday interactions with the AI.
Called Characteristics, the new feature sits within ChatGPT’s personalisation settings and works alongside the existing 8 preset personalities that already allow users to change the chatbot’s voice and tone. With this addition, users can further customise how the AI communicates with them.
In a post on X, the official OpenAI account announced that users can “now adjust specific characteristics in ChatGPT, like warmth, enthusiasm, and emoji use.” The company said the update is aimed at helping users shape a version of ChatGPT that better suits their personal preferences for regular conversations.
OpenAI clarified that changing these characteristics does not affect ChatGPT’s core abilities. The chatbot’s intelligence and accuracy remain the same, while only the style and delivery of responses are adjusted. The impact is expected to be most noticeable during casual and conversational exchanges.
There are 4 adjustable options available under the Characteristics section. Users can access them by opening the side bar, going to settings or tapping their name on the mobile app, and selecting Personalisation. The available options include Warm, Enthusiastic, Headers and lists, and Emoji.
Each setting can be adjusted to more, default, or less. Increasing Warm results in friendlier and more personable replies, while lowering it keeps responses more professional and factual. Adjusting Enthusiasm to more makes replies sound more energetic, while setting it to less creates a calmer and more neutral tone. Emoji usage can also be increased or reduced, though there is currently no option to turn emojis off completely.
For broader personality changes, users can still choose from the Base style and tone options in the Personalisation menu. These include 8 presets such as Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical.
