OpenAI’s push into advertising is gaining momentum, but early feedback from advertisers highlights serious gaps in measurement and performance tracking.
The ad offering inside ChatGPT currently provides very limited data, lacks automated buying systems, and offers minimal targeting options. This makes it difficult for advertisers to assess whether their campaigns are delivering any real impact.
Industry experts have pointed out several operational challenges. There is no automated system to purchase ad inventory, with deals being handled through calls, emails, and spreadsheets. At the same time, advertisers receive almost no meaningful performance data to evaluate results. In fact, 2 agency executives revealed they were unable to prove that these ads generated measurable business outcomes for their clients.
This creates a significant concern for marketers. Without clear metrics or attribution, brands are essentially investing without visibility. As a result, advertisers are being advised to treat ChatGPT ads as an experimental channel rather than a performance-driven one.
Despite these limitations, OpenAI is preparing to expand its ad reach. The company has informed advertisers that ads will soon be shown to all U.S. users on free and low-cost ChatGPT tiers in the coming weeks. This expansion will significantly increase audience scale, but measurement capabilities have not yet evolved to match it.
OpenAI has also suggested that campaign performance may improve if advertisers provide multiple variations of text and visual creatives. However, without proper reporting tools, validating this improvement remains a challenge.
The situation presents a notable contrast. While OpenAI is known for building advanced AI systems, its advertising infrastructure currently relies on outdated, manual processes.
Bottom line: ChatGPT ads are on the verge of reaching a much larger audience, but advertisers still lack the tools to measure effectiveness. Entering the platform now means operating with limited visibility and uncertain returns.
