During its official launch event, OpenAI revealed that GPT-5 scored the highest health performance ratings among all previous models. This was achieved through an internal benchmark developed with over 250 medical professionals, ensuring clinical relevance. GPT-5 can accurately interpret biopsy reports, lab results, and radiology findings, explain treatment options, and help patients prepare informed questions for doctors.
A real-life example shared at the launch featured Carolina, a patient diagnosed with three types of cancer in one week. Overwhelmed, she turned to ChatGPT-5 with her biopsy report. The AI provided a clear explanation, broke down the diagnosis, and helped her prepare for a consultation with her doctor. “By the time I spoke with my doctor three hours later, I already had a baseline understanding of what I was dealing with,” she said.
OpenAI highlights that GPT-5 can be particularly useful in rural and remote areas by offering preliminary assessments, treatment education, and guidance on when to seek urgent help. However, it stresses that GPT-5 should be used only as a support tool and not as a replacement for professional medical care.
