Character AI appoints Karandeep Anand as CEO

Karandeep Anand has been named CEO of Character AI, a rapidly expanding AI chatbot platform that is well-liked by Gen Z consumers. Anand, a board adviser to Character AI and a former vice president of business products at Meta, will guide the firm through a critical stage characterized by quick growth and regulatory scrutiny.

His hiring follows co-founder and CEO Noam Shazeer’s departure to join Character AI’s backer, Google, less than a year ago. The action sparked regulatory concerns, and US government officials began looking into the firms’ relationship with Google and the terms of their contract.

According to statistics from digital analytics company Sensor Tower, character AI has experienced phenomenal development, drawing tens of millions of monthly active users, 66% of whom are between the ages of 18 and 24 and 72% of whom identify as women. However, the site has also come under fire for its moderation features, and it is presently being sued for allegedly contributing to the death of a 14-year-old American kid through one of its AI roleplay chatbots.

The business responded by introducing additional safety filters, although they have also received criticism for being overly moderate. Anand reiterated Character AI’s commitment to user safety in a public message to the company’s user base worldwide.“We’re going to move fast to give you a bunch of the things you’ve been asking for […] We’re going to make the filter less overbearing. (We care deeply about user safety and always will. But too often, the app filters things that are perfectly harmless. We’re going to fix that.),” he said.

Significant product enhancements, such as greater memory, higher-quality models, more transparent moderation guidelines, and easier discoverability for community-generated characters, will be implemented “in the next 60 days,” according to Anand. By allowing characters to “jump off the page” through audio-video interaction, character AI is also advancing immersive, multimodal experiences.

“I’m committing to launch all of that this summer and the team is hard at work to make all this real soon. I’ve spent many years building products, and I’m going to make sure we move fast and give you features that delight you and make [Character AI] more immersive and more fun,” Anand added.

Character AI’s rise in popularity and the emotional bonds users have with its AI chatbot characters have the potential to transform entertainment-based chatbots, which were previously a haphazard use of generative AI, into a quickly developing cultural trend. The company’s long-term goal is to “shape the future of entertainment,” Anand admitted.
