In a sweeping crackdown against a cross-border cyber fraud network, the Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested six individuals accused of orchestrating an elaborate tech support scam that preyed on Japanese citizens. This high-stakes mission, codenamed Operation Chakra V, unfolded on May 28 with synchronized raids at 19 sites spread across Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
The arrested individuals include Shubham Jaiswal, Vivek Raj, and Adarsh Kumar from Varanasi, Rohit Maurya from Ayodhya, Ashu Singh from Delhi, and Kapil Ghakhar from Panipat. These men were allegedly part of a sophisticated cybercrime syndicate running illegal call centres that posed as genuine customer support hubs.
These fake support centres duped unsuspecting Japanese nationals by masquerading as representatives of well-known global tech companies such as Microsoft. They misled victims into believing their devices were compromised, and then manipulated them into transferring funds to various mule bank accounts.
The CBI seized substantial digital and physical evidence during the raids, pointing to the massive scale of the operation. Their tactics reportedly involved advanced social engineering and technical deception, designed meticulously to exploit trust and create urgency.
“Following the registration of the case, the CBI worked in close coordination with the National Police Agency of Japan and Microsoft Corporation. This CBI collaborative international engagement proved critical in identifying the perpetrators and tracing the operational structure of the syndicates, ultimately leading to the successful crackdown in India,” said a spokesperson for the agency.
This action underscores the CBI’s growing capability to tackle cybercrime threats that transcend borders. Their proactive partnership with international stakeholders reflects a deep commitment to shielding global citizens from digital manipulation and fraud.
The CBI agency reaffirmed its dedication to advancing its technology and investigative infrastructure, ensuring cybercriminals face the weight of justice. Operation Chakra V, a symbol of digital vigilance, represents the fusion of global cooperation and strategic precision.
