CBI-led global operation busts cross-border cyber fraud networks

A coordinated international crackdown has led to the dismantling of multiple cyber fraud networks operating across borders, with Indian agencies working alongside global counterparts to target technology-enabled financial crimes.

The Central Bureau of Investigation launched Multinational Operation CyStrike on January 30 in partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and law enforcement agencies from the United Kingdom, Kuwait, Ireland, and Singapore. The operation focused on transnational cyber-enabled financial crime networks operating from India and other participating countries, according to an official release.

As part of the operation, the CBI conducted searches at 35 locations across New Delhi, Bihar, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Telangana, and West Bengal. These actions led to the dismantling of several cyber crime networks that targeted victims in the USA, United Kingdom, Kuwait, Ireland, Singapore, and India using fake online identities.

During one of the searches, investigators uncovered a cyber-enabled financial crime network being run from New Delhi that targeted victims in the USA. Multiple electronic devices, including laptops, mobile phones, and computer hard disks containing incriminating digital evidence, were seized. The key operative, Pfokrehrii Peter, was arrested on the spot.

In another case, the CBI busted a separate network operating from New Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Karnataka through the fake domain https://eservicemoi-Kw.com. The accused allegedly duped Indian nationals by offering fraudulent Kuwaiti e-visas and fake job appointment letters from leading companies in Kuwait in exchange for money. During the searches, electronic devices containing forged e-visas and appointment offers were recovered, along with cash worth Rs 60 lakh from one of the accused.

The operation also led to the dismantling of cyber crime networks targeting victims in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Singapore. Mule accounts used to route illegal proceeds from foreign victims to the accused were identified and taken down.

Operation CyStrike, led by the CBI in close coordination with INTERPOL and foreign law enforcement agencies, has resulted in significant disruption of organised transnational cyber-enabled financial crime networks, the release said.
