The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested nine people in a nationwide operation targeting cyber fraud networks that used nearly 8.5 lakh mule bank accounts. These arrests are part of Operation Chakra V, which involved coordinated raids at 42 locations across Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.
According to officials, the fraudulent accounts were created using fake documents or without proper KYC verification. These accounts were used to move money linked to scams such as UPI frauds, fake investment schemes, and impersonation-based crimes. Some bank officials allegedly ignored internal warnings and failed to follow Reserve Bank of India guidelines.
The CBI has registered a case under various sections including criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery, and criminal misconduct under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The arrested individuals include agents, account holders, aggregators, and middlemen involved in setting up and operating the mule accounts.
During the CBI raids, investigators seized digital evidence including mobile phones, KYC documents, transaction records, and bank account opening forms. These findings are expected to further uncover the depth of the fraudulent operations.
This is one of the largest operations conducted by the CBI to break down the financial structure used by cybercriminals. The crackdown also follows earlier actions targeting the misuse of pre-activated SIM cards and dummy accounts used for online scams.
The CBI has advised the public to remain cautious, avoid suspicious investment schemes, and report any unusual account activity. Investigations are still ongoing as authorities continue to trace the entire fraud network.
