CBI arrests key member of cyberfraud syndicate targeting Japanese citizens

The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a key accused linked to an international cybercrime network that specifically targeted Japanese citizens through tech support scams. The arrest has been made under the ongoing Operation Chakra V, aimed at curbing organised cyberfraud activities.

The accused, identified as Dwibendu Moharana, was taken into custody at the Bhubaneswar airport when he returned to India. Officials stated that he had fled to the United Arab Emirates on May 29, 2025, shortly after an illegal call centre run by him at Voip Connect Private Limited in Noida was exposed during coordinated raids.

Earlier, on May 28, 2025, the agency had carried out searches at 19 locations across Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. These operations led to the arrest of six individuals and the dismantling of two illegal call centres. Moharana remained absconding until his arrest this week.

According to the agency, Moharana operated a call centre that was involved in advanced social engineering and online deception. His associates allegedly posed as customer support staff of well known multinational technology companies and tricked Japanese citizens into making payments under false claims of technical assistance or security issues.

After his arrest, Moharana was brought to Delhi on a transit warrant and presented before a special court. He has been remanded to CBI custody for three days for further questioning.

So far, a total of seven accused have been arrested in this case, including Ashu Singh from Delhi, Kapil Ghakhar from Panipat, Rohit Maurya from Ayodhya and Shubham Jaiswal, Vivek Raj and Adarsh Kumar from Varanasi. Chargesheets have already been filed, and the individuals are currently in judicial custody.

The agency said that the operation was conducted with support from the National Police Agency of Japan and Microsoft Corporation, leading to a significant disruption of the syndicate’s activities.
