Delhi Police sub-inspector assigned to the cyber police station, Rohini, was detained by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly taking and demanding a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh. Rahul Malik, the defendant, was taken into custody on March 19.
The CBI claims that a written complaint led to the registration of a case against the accused sub-inspector and other unidentified individuals. The complainant, who is based in Mumbai and runs a tour and travel firm, has a business relationship with a private company that deals with cash management systems.
The private firm was accused of creating the complainant’s virtual wallet login credentials under a false identity. An FIR filed at the cyber police station was looking into the private company’s situation.
The complainant’s brother-in-law reportedly joined the probe after receiving a notification from Malik. Malik threatened to arrest them when they showed up for the investigation.
Malik paid the complainant a bribe of Rs 50 lakh to remove himself and his brother-in-law’s names from the case when he visited the complainant’s home in Navi Mumbai on March 7. If the payment was not paid, he threatened to have them arrested.
Malik invited the complainant to meet him at a hotel on Ghodbunder Road the next day. Malik typed the sum of Rs 16 lakh on his mobile phone during the meeting, threatening the complainant once again and demanding a bribe. When the complainant and his attorney later went to the Rohini cyber police station, Malik threatened to take action against them if the bribe was not paid. The CBI said that following negotiations, the accused accepted a payment of Rs 14 lakh and disclosed the identities of the recipients.
The complainant was provided the hawala token number and the number of the Mumbai-based hawala operator to whom the bribe was to be paid during subsequent procedures. Accordingly, on March 19, a trap was prepared by CBI.
