CBI arrests Mumbai bank manager for helping cybercriminals open mule accounts

A Mumbai-based bank manager, Nitesh Rai, has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on 11 November 2025 for his role in facilitating the opening of mule accounts used in cybercrimes. Investigations revealed that Rai, an Axis Bank official, accepted illegal payments and misused his position to process account opening forms, creating channels for the transfer and layering of cybercrime proceeds.

The accounts in question were reportedly used in multiple cybercrimes, including Digital Arrest fraud cases. A case has been registered against Rai under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Banking and Non-Banking Systems regulations. He was produced before a Mumbai court and remanded to CBI custody for further questioning.

Two cybercriminals who paid bribes to the bank manager have also been named in the FIR. They are accused of offering illegal gratification to a public servant and had already been arrested in connection with ongoing Digital Arrest cybercrime investigations.

Evidence collected during the probe points to a larger pattern of organised cybercrime networks exploiting banking systems to launder funds obtained from cyber frauds targeting innocent citizens.

Authorities emphasised that any involvement of bankers, whether active or passive, including employees of private and cooperative banks, in enabling cybercrime will lead to action under the Prevention of Corruption Act as well as Banking and Non-Banking Systems regulations. The CBI reaffirmed its commitment to taking strict action against such individuals.
