Design workflows could become more flexible with a new artificial intelligence feature launched by Canva. The visual communication platform has introduced an AI-powered tool called Magic Layers that can transform flat or static images into layered, editable designs.
The feature allows users to take any image, including AI-generated visuals, and modify individual elements within it. This means users can adjust text, layouts, and components separately to create a completely new design from the original image.
According to the company, Magic Layers converts images into vectors so that different design elements appear as separate editable layers. This approach enables users to build new design assets from existing images, even when vector files are not originally available. It also expands the possibilities for AI-generated visuals, which are usually limited to static image formats.
The tool is powered by the Canva Design Model, the company’s proprietary foundation model introduced in October 2025. The system analyses the entire design, studies the structure and relationships between elements, and then recreates them as editable components.
During the process, the AI restores text as live text boxes, separates design components, and preserves the original layout so the final result becomes a fully editable design.
At present, Magic Layers supports single-page PNG and JPG image formats. Canva stated that additional capabilities are already being developed.
To use the feature, eligible users simply upload a supported image. The tool automatically converts the file into an editable format. This allows users to directly adjust the design instead of repeatedly generating new images through prompts when results are not satisfactory.
The Sydney-based company has started rolling out Magic Layers in public beta across Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Canva said the feature will expand to more countries soon, although a global launch timeline has not yet been announced.
As part of Canva’s AI tools suite, access to Magic Layers requires a subscription to the platform.
