In a move aimed at strengthening social security for workers in the informal economy, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the continuation of the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) up to FY 2030–31, along with extended government funding support.
The decision includes continued financial assistance for promotional and developmental activities, as well as gap funding to ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of the scheme. These measures are intended to expand outreach, especially among unorganised sector workers, through awareness initiatives and capacity-building efforts.
Under the approved framework, government support will focus on two key areas. First, promotional and developmental activities will be strengthened to improve awareness and participation among low-income and informal workers. Second, gap funding will be provided to address viability requirements and maintain the financial health of the pension scheme.
The continuation of APY is expected to have a significant impact on old-age income security. The scheme plays a critical role in ensuring a steady pension for millions of workers who do not have access to formal retirement benefits. It also contributes to deeper financial inclusion and supports India’s broader transition towards a pensioned society, aligning with the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 through sustainable social security mechanisms.
Atal Pension Yojana was launched on 9 May 2015 with the objective of providing old-age income security to workers in the unorganised sector. The funding scheme offers a guaranteed minimum monthly pension ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000, starting at the age of 60, depending on the subscriber’s contribution.
The programme has seen steady growth over the years. As of 19 January 2026, more than 8.66 crore subscribers have enrolled under APY, establishing it as a key pillar of India’s inclusive social security framework.
The extension of the scheme reflects the continued need for government support to sustain awareness, strengthen institutional capacity, and bridge financial gaps. This support is considered essential to ensure that the benefits of APY continue to reach those who need them the most over the coming years.
