Scammer posing as a chartered accountant defrauded a 40-year-old Colaba man out of Rs 2.4 crore in a complex automobile rental scheme. In 2023, a common acquaintance brought the victim, Suhas Mestri, to the accused, Rahul Shah.
According to a Hindustan Times story, the event occurred when Shah persuaded Mestri to purchase 11 automobiles on the grounds that they would be rented to diplomats and other high-profile visitors staying at reputable hotels in Mumbai. Shah, who supposedly had connections in these hotels, promised Mestri large monthly returns and even set up a visit from bank representatives to help with the paperwork at her house.
With the belief that Shah would take care of the rents and EMI payments, Mestri took out loans for the automobile purchases, including a personal loan for down payments.
But between August 2023 and February 2024, Mestri discovered that Shah had stopped being approachable and that the EMIS were not being paid. According to the media, Mestri eventually went to the Kalachowki police after being left to pay the monthly bills by himself.
The accused was taken into custody by the police and charged on Monday under the applicable laws. The case serves as a reminder of the rising prevalence of financial fraud that involves impersonation and exaggerated claims of large profits.
