BYD moves to link cars and homes through HarmonyOS partnership

BYD Automotive has taken a step toward deeper smart connectivity by applying to join the Global Intelligent Internet of Things Alliance GIIC and seeking a council member role, according to a media report. The application was submitted on December 17, 2025.

Founded in June 2024, GIIC is an international industry organisation focused on integrating IoT technologies with the HarmonyOS ecosystem. The alliance currently brings together more than 350 enterprises and institutions, including Huawei, Haier, China Mobile, and the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology. Its goal is to build a standardised digital foundation for IoT applications and accelerate large scale HarmonyOS adoption.

BYD’s entry into the alliance is aimed at combining its expertise in intelligent vehicle technology with GIIC’s wider industry network. Together, BYD and GIIC plan to lead the development of full scenario connectivity standards that link humans, vehicles, and homes within a single ecosystem.

A key focus of the collaboration will be AI agent level coordination and the technical standardisation of interfaces and data protocols between automotive grade HarmonyOS devices and smart home terminals. This effort is intended to address long standing industry issues caused by fragmented systems, incompatible interfaces, and inconsistent communication standards.

The partnership will support cross scenario connectivity across BYD’s complete vehicle lineup, as well as associated smart home and wearable devices. Users are expected to experience unified interactions across travel, residential, and entertainment settings. For instance, voice commands issued from inside a vehicle could activate home air conditioning, lighting, and water heating before arrival. At the same time, smart home control panels could be used to manage vehicle preheating, navigation, and battery status.

Security integration is also part of the plan. Two way communication between home safety systems and vehicle status alerts will allow users to receive real time updates across both environments, creating a continuous protection network that covers mobility and living spaces.

In addition, BYD and GIIC plan to explore pilot projects that showcase immersive “human-vehicle-home” bright life experience spaces. These environments will allow consumers to interact with connected vehicles and home appliances during the purchase process, demonstrating how cross device connectivity works in real world scenarios.

BYD’s move to join GIIC signals a broader push toward standardised, cross scenario smart connectivity within the HarmonyOS ecosystem.
