Navrangpura businessman who was defrauded of Rs 11.29 lakh through cyberfraud in the name of a reputable pharmaceutical company filed a case with the cybercrime police on Saturday.
The owner of an organic chemical plant, Hussain Sukhsarwala, has been in business for 35 years and frequently buys raw materials from a certain pharmaceutical firm.
The event happened between September 5 and September 11, 2024, when Sukhsarwala got an email that seemed to be from the authorized representative of the pharmaceutical firm. He was notified via email that the business had updated its bank account information and given him a new account number for upcoming payments.
Sukhsarwala trusted the message and used RTGS to send two payments totaling Rs 11.29 lakh from his bank account. However, he became skeptical and got in touch with the pharmaceutical business directly after getting further emails asking for more payments. To his surprise, the business explained that they didn’t send any such emails or alter their account.
Sukhsarwala reported the incident to the cybercrime helpline as soon as he realized he had been the victim of fraud, and he was acknowledged for his complaint. After that, Sukhsarwala complained to the cybercrime police, requesting that they look into the fraud and prosecute the unidentified perpetrators.
Under the Information Technology Act and the BNS, cybercrime police filed a cheating complaint.
