Hyderabad Businessman Foils Cyber Extortion Bid Impersonating Telangana Official

A Hyderabad-based businessman narrowly escaped a sophisticated cyber extortion attempt by fraudsters who impersonated a senior Telangana official on WhatsApp. The timely verification by the businessman prevented him from falling victim to the elaborate scheme.

The fraudulent attempt began when the businessman received a WhatsApp message from an individual posing as a high-ranking Telangana government official. The impostor claimed that the businessman’s daughter had been arrested in Canada, attempting to create immediate panic and pressure for a quick financial transaction.

Fortunately, instead of succumbing to the cyber fraudsters’ demands, the businessman exercised caution. He immediately contacted his daughter directly, who confirmed that she was safe and sound, completely unaware of any such arrest or situation. This quick verification exposed the elaborate hoax.

Following the foiled attempt, the businessman promptly filed a complaint with the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau. Authorities have since registered a case, and an investigation into the cyber fraud is currently underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the audacious extortion attempt. The cyber incident serves as a stark reminder for the public to verify information independently, especially when faced with urgent or alarming demands.
