BSNL set to roll out CNAP caller name feature across India soon

In a move aimed at improving call transparency, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is preparing to introduce the CNAP (Caller Name Presentation) feature for its users across India.

CNAP, an initiative by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, allows users to see the caller’s name when receiving a call. The feature is designed to help users make informed decisions before answering and reduce spam calls.

According to reports, BSNL has already deployed the solution and is currently testing its integration with private telecom operators. An industry executive said, “Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have done it for the first time. The solution has already been deployed for BSNL, and now the integration is going on in a zone-wise manner”.

The rollout is expected to take place nationwide within 3 to 4 months after integration is complete. The solution has been developed and implemented by Centre for Development of Telematics for the public sector operator.

CNAP was introduced by TRAI and launched in phases in the second half of 2025. The Department of Telecommunications conducted trial runs on both 4G and 5G networks.

The feature displays the names of unknown callers without requiring any additional subscription fee. It does not need internet access or third-party apps like Truecaller. Instead, it uses KYC-verified subscriber details to show the caller’s identity.

However, the CNAP feature will not be available on feature phones.

The rollout highlights ongoing efforts in India’s telecom sector to enhance user safety and reduce unwanted calls through built-in network solutions.
