BSNL and Viasat India expand collaboration to boost satellite and UAV skills

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Viasat India have announced new collaboration efforts to support skill development, industry readiness and commercial innovation in satellite communications and emerging technologies. The partnership will also focus on advanced uncrewed aircraft solutions. These initiatives were formally launched during the India Mobile Congress 2025.

The Bharat Ratna Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute of Telecom Training in Jabalpur is playing a key role by providing infrastructure and logistics support for technology training programmes. The collaboration between Viasat and the institute will promote skills development and create a Centre of Excellence for uncrewed aerial vehicles, the Internet of Things and related advanced technologies.

The institute will provide modern facilities including classrooms and training support. Engineering students from Information Technology, Electronics and Communication, and Computer Science will be able to take part in sessions and demonstrations of Viasat terminals at the Centre of Excellence.

Viasat and BSNL will also work together to commercialise Viasat Velaris uncrewed air solutions in India. Velaris is a satellite communication service that gives uncrewed aircraft secure and reliable connectivity to operate beyond visual line of sight. It works on Viasat global L band satellite network which is designed for safety critical applications and high reliability. The aim is to support the safe use of uncrewed aircraft in commercial airspace.

These efforts are expected to help build India growing low altitude economy which covers aerial operations below 3000 metres including drones and advanced air mobility. The drone market in India is expanding fast with major growth expected by 2030. The partnership is expected to help create the ecosystem needed for this progress.

Both organisations say these efforts support Government of India missions like Skill India and Digital India. The programmes will give engineering students exposure to satellite technology and applications in uncrewed aerial vehicles and the Internet of Things.

Robert J Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, said, “This is a strategic collaboration that aligns with our goal to foster innovation and build indigenous capabilities. The Centre of Excellence at BRBRAITT will equip a new generation of professionals with critical skills, while our work to commercialize Viasat’s Velaris will enable new and innovative services for our customers, driving economic growth and development across the country.”

Gautam Sharma, Managing Director of Viasat India, said, “We are excited to expand our work with BSNL, a trusted leader in Indian telecommunications. These collaborations are a testament to our commitment to India’s ‘Digital India’ vision and will help unlock the immense potential of the country’s low altitute economy. We are also proud to collaborate with BSNL’s BRBRAITT to establish a robust framework for educating students in satellite technology across India.”
