BNMC clocks historic property tax recovery under Abhay amnesty drive

A strong response from taxpayers has helped the Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation achieve its highest ever short term property tax collection in record time. In just 24 days, the civic body recovered Rs 23.67 crore under the Abhay amnesty scheme.

The special scheme was active from November 7 to November 30 and offered a full 100 percent waiver on interest for those who cleared their pending dues. This incentive encouraged 14,578 property owners to come forward and settle their arrears during the period.

The impact of the drive can also be seen in the overall collection for the year so far. Between April 1 and November 30, the corporation collected Rs 52.95 crore in property tax. This is nearly double the Rs 27.80 crore collected during the same period last year, even though last year also included three rounds of full interest waiver.

Following the success of the November scheme, the civic body has now introduced another relief measure for defaulters from December 1. Under the new offer, taxpayers are being given a 75 percent waiver on interest. Officials report that daily collections of nearly Rs 20 lakh are being recorded under this revised scheme.

The record breaking recovery reflects a renewed focus on improving tax compliance and strengthening civic finances. With continued incentives and strong public participation, the corporation aims to further boost property tax collections in the coming months.
