The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started demolishing illegal residential structures in Kandivali’s Singh Estate to make way for the long-awaited 120-foot development plan road from Magathane to Goregaon. Migration of 47 project affected persons is already in progress, and the proposal to reserve 120 more PAPs is in the final stage of approval with the slum rehabilitation authority.
Earlier, the civic body had rejected a suggestion to realign the road to save slum structures, stating that realignment was technically not possible. Most of the road has already been constructed, according to the BMC chief, after hearing petitions from Lokhandwala Township residents forwarded by the high court.
Following a six-month delay after its own order, the BMC conducted a lottery to allot residences to 47 PAPs in Bitcon Infrastructure’s project in Poisar Village, Kandivali East. Only after this allotment did the civic body begin demolition of the illegal structures on Wednesday, responding to repeated letters from the Lokhandwala Residents’ Association requesting a time-bound implementation of the DP road.
The demolition of 47 structures in Singh Estate is expected to be completed by October 2. The BMC has also submitted proposals to reserve 120 PAPs in Suhas Modi building, Kandivali East, and 38 PAPs in PATON building, Lokhandwala Township, BMC awaiting final approvals. Once these approvals are received, lotteries will be held for remaining PAPs. The process is expected to continue over the next two months.
LRA founders Rajiv Kashyap and Shishir Vivekanand Shetty, who filed the petition, emphasized the importance of consistent follow-up for implementation. Kashyap said, “It is incorrect to assume that once the order is passed by the hon’ble high court, the rest of the process automatically follows. As a matter of fact, the actual hardship begins only after the order. One has to consistently follow up with the BMC to ensure saving of time and quicker implementation.”
Shetty added, “We had to ensure that our affected neighbours of Singh Estate got the best of the PAPs which could be made available to them because it is very difficult for anyone to let go of their homes where they’ve been living for the past four decades. Hence we made sure that all such requests made by them were never objected to by us, by keeping the right kind of patience as well as rigorous follow up. The plan given by R/South ward is more or less on track and we’re hopeful to see the road being built by January 2026.”
