In a major development, officers from BKC Police Station have apprehended three individuals linked to a fake gold scam on Wednesday, in which a man was defrauded of Rs 2 lakh. The suspects reportedly set up a fraudulent Instagram account that advertised imported gold at reduced prices, enticing unsuspecting buyers with the lure of lucrative deals.
The suspects were apprehended near CST Road in Kalina, Santacruz East, after police executed a trap based on specific intelligence. One of the suspects attempted to flee in a BMW towards Kurla, but after a brief chase and foot pursuit, all three were captured from various locations. According to the police, the incident occurred on May 27, as reported by Media.
At the rendezvous point, the victim handed over Rs 2 lakh in cash. The suspects then impersonated police officers and staged a fake raid to confuse and intimidate him. They quickly escaped the scene without delivering any gold.
According to the report, a case was filed at BKC Police Station under sections 318(4) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). During the investigation, police utilized technical surveillance and local informants to locate the suspects. They received information that the accused would return to the same area on June 2. That’s when the police established a trap and successfully arrested them after a short chase.
Further investigation disclosed that the trio had been involved in similar fraud cases in Maharashtra and Gujarat. The police have cautioned the public to remain vigilant when engaging with online offers and to always verify the source before making any payments.
