The Bihar government is strengthening its fight against cybercrime by setting up dedicated Cyber Forensic Units at the Forensic Science Laboratories in Patna and Rajgir. These units are scheduled to begin operations from March.
Additional Director General of Police Parasnath from the Criminal Investigation Department said the new units will carry out scientific analysis of digital evidence. This will include mobile phones, laptops, hard drives, social media accounts and emails. “The number of cybercrimes is constantly increasing, and there is a pressing need for specialised forensic capabilities,” he said.
The move is part of a larger plan to expand the state’s forensic network. The ADG confirmed that six new forensic science laboratories will be established this year in Gaya, Bettiah, Munger, Saharsa, Purnea and Chhapra. These facilities aim to reduce delays in investigations and speed up the submission of forensic reports in pending cases.
In a separate update, Parasnath spoke about the death of a NEET student at a girls hostel in Patna’s Chitragupta Nagar area. He said a forensic team has already visited the site and collected evidence. A senior officer is personally overseeing the case to ensure there are no lapses in the investigation. The forensic report is expected within four to five days. “The police and forensic agencies are treating this matter with utmost seriousness. The truth will be brought to light,” he said.
Experts believe that the addition of cyber forensic units and more laboratories will greatly improve the ability of law enforcement agencies to handle cybercrime. They also say this will help ensure quicker and more accurate investigations in serious cases, leading to faster justice.
