Big Tech firms record strongest headcount growth in India in three years

The leading US technology firms Meta, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix, and Google have hired more than 30,000 new employees in India over the past 12 months, marking their strongest headcount growth in the country in three years.

This surge comes despite ongoing trade tensions between the United States and India and reflects strong demand for specialised skills in artificial intelligence and related technologies. Industry data shows that this is the highest net new hiring by the group and its affiliates since 2022, with a year-on-year increase of over 30 per cent between August 2024 and August 2025.

The previous peak of 37,000 hires was recorded in 2022, driven by post-pandemic recruitment momentum. The latest numbers underline how Indian tech talent continues to be a critical resource for these companies.

The cohort saw attrition levels of around 18 to 20 per cent over the past year, which means gross hiring stood at 75,000 during this period. This includes both replacement hiring and net new additions.

Hiring growth also coincides with major expansion plans announced by the companies for 2025, even as they face economic uncertainty and the impact of US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50 per cent tariff on Indian imports.

Active job openings, however, remain moderate at 5,200 in the last four weeks, which is still only half of the levels seen during 2021 and 2022, when open roles averaged about 10,000 to 11,000.

Neeti Sharma, Chief Executive of TeamLease Digital, said, “While Big Techs have deepened their India footprint through office expansions and strategic announcements, the hiring surge is focused on capability-driven roles rather than broad-based job creation.” She added that current hiring is centred on building teams for AI, cloud, and cybersecurity rather than mass recruitment.

Kamal Karanth, Co-founder of a staffing firm, said most active roles are in engineering, IT, programme management, product management, and risk and security. Salaries are expected to remain in the range of 10 to 25 per cent hikes, as companies continue selective talent hiring amid a volatile environment.

Recent expansion moves include Microsoft leasing office space in Hyderabad, Apple signing a long-term lease in Bengaluru, Meta opening a new office in the same city, and Google unveiling its Ananta campus. OpenAI has also announced plans to set up its first office in New Delhi later this year.
