Bhopal Cyber Crime Branch got over 363 SIM cards blocked within a year

In a strong crackdown on cybercriminals operating across the country, the Cyber Crime Branch in Bhopal has successfully blocked more than 363 SIM cards over the past year.

These SIM cards were used by fraudsters in various scams, including digital arrests, fake job offers, crypto schemes, and online trading frauds. According to officials, the SIM cards were mostly obtained using forged documents. The Cyber Crime Branch forwarded deactivation requests to the respective telecom service providers, who then blocked the numbers.

Additional DCP (Crime) Shailendra Singh Chauhan said, not only were mule account holders traced in these cases, but mobile numbers involved in such frauds were also kept under regular surveillance. The numbers reported by victims through complaints were submitted to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). Following this, the concerned telecom companies usually blocked the numbers within three to five days.

Authorities revealed that although the SIM cards were active in various locations across India, a majority of them were found in Uttar Pradesh, the NCR region, and Jharkhand.

Officials further said that cyber fraud agents often used fake Aadhaar cards and other identification proofs to activate SIM cards. In some cases, local gangs managed to get documents from people under false pretenses and used them to activate the cards. These SIM cards were later sold to cybercriminals via Telegram channels.

“People should report such calls to helpline 1903,” said Chauhan. He also added that to curb cyber crimes effectively, telecom service providers must play a proactive role by identifying and blocking numbers that are repeatedly used for fraud and spam calls.

The Cyber Crime Branch continues to monitor fraudulent activities and is working with service providers and the NCRP to prevent such scams.
