Progress on India’s sovereign artificial intelligence platform is moving steadily, with key language milestones set to be reached soon, according to the government.
The Indian government’s multilingual AI engine, BharatGen, is expected to complete its text-based services by the end of this month. The update was shared by Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh during a Rajya Sabha session held on Thursday.
The minister said development work has already been completed for 15 languages and will soon cover all 22 official languages of India. He added that BharatGen is being built as an evolving platform, with scope for further expansion in the future.
Responding to a question raised by BJP member Bhubaneswar Kalita, Singh said, “We have already completed 15 languages. We will be completing 22 (official languages) in this month itself.” He also highlighted that the project remains open to including more languages and dialects beyond the official list as development continues.
BharatGen was launched in October 2024 as a government-led initiative to develop a sovereign AI model tailored to Indian needs. The platform is designed to support a wide range of AI services across Indian languages.
According to the minister, BharatGen will offer key capabilities such as Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models and Text-to-Speech (TTS) models. These tools are aimed at improving digital access and language inclusion across the country.
Singh further stated that out of the 22 official languages, 15 languages will have both speech and vision modules completed by the end of this month. These modules are expected to strengthen BharatGen’s ability to understand, process and generate content across multiple formats.
With this progress, BharatGen is positioned as a foundational step toward building India’s own AI ecosystem, focused on linguistic diversity and long-term scalability.
